Photo Essay of Tornado

Web posted on August 21, 2005

Environment Canada has confirmed that the two tornadoes which caused devastation in the Centre Wellington area were F-2 twisters with winds ranging between 180 and 240 kilometres an hour. Each cut a 300-metre swath of destruction, destroying homes and barns, uprooting trees and flipping cars.

The Fountain Pen toured the area and presents the following photo essay of the destruction. Many of the photos have high resolution versions which can be accesses by clicking on the photo

Nochol Township Building

The Nichol Township Office suffered extensive damage. Equipment in the building was also damaged but the extent is not yet known.

Tree Snapped off
This tree was snapped off, but trees on both sides were untouched.

This scene was common throughout the area. Trees were snapped off and left lying in fields and farm yards. This barn, on Sideroad 15 between Fergus and Elora, sustained damage but remained standing.

J. K. Bed & Breakfast just north of Fergus won't be welcoming visitors for a while. The tornado caused extensive damage to the exterior and roof of the house.

This house, just down the street from the one above, suffered similar damage.

On the road to Belwood, there was an open house ---- er---- open barn courtesy of the twister. This barn suffered extensive damage as did trees in the farm yard. However, the house, located close by, remains intact.

This house appears to have missed significant damage. However, many trees on the property were toppled and a garage was demolished.

Downed trees on the same property lay scattered about.

Garage destroyed

It looks like the garage was hit full-on by the tornado.

The domino effect. All these trees along Sideroad 15 were uprooted one after the other as the twister passed through.

Authorities in the area said that three houses were demolished and nine badly damaged.

Over 4000 homes were still without electricity on Saturday due to downed wires and broken poles. However, by the time of writing (9:00pm EDT Sunday), Hydro One had restored power to all but 13 customers.
